Community Health Update - Acadia First Nation - Submitted by Jill Francis

October 2011

Acadia First Nation’s community health program funds the following services:

  • monthly footcare services for eligible seniors at local certified clinics.
  • the baby car seat program for the newborns of registered band members
  • workshops on nutrition and health issues.

The workshops scheduled for Fall 2011 are with Angela McDonald, Nutritionist for the Union of Nova Scotia Indians (topic to be determined).
For information on any of the above services or suggestions for upcoming workshops, please contact Jill Francis, Community Health Representative (CHR) (902-627-1245, acadiachr@acadiafirstnation.ca).

Also, many members know about the Non-Insured Health Benefits Program (NIHB) that provides a limited range of medically necessary health-related goods and services that are not otherwise provided by other government programs or private plans. Eligible recipients do not need to register but become eligible once they have received their registration date and number as a Status Indian. More information on the services and eligibility for coverage can be accessed at:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fniah-spnia/nihb-ssna/index-eng.php
or by calling: 1-800-565-3294
or by contacting the CHR above.

Included with this update is an introduction to the NIHB program taken from First Nations, Inuit and Aboriginal Health - Non-Insured Health Benefits for First Nations and Inuit’s website (above). On this website there is a tab to access information for those who have recently received their Indian Status through Bill C-3. The information from this tab is included in the newsletter for easier access.
